What is Sciatica pain
Sciatica pain, sometimes referred to as lumbar radiculopathy is nerve pain described by leg pain, tingling, weakness, or numbness originating in the lower back and radiating along the sciatic nerve through the legs. You are more likely to experience sciatica pain after age 20 and most likely in your 50s.
Sciatica pain is often searing and sharp pain normally felt only through one leg. Sciatica pain is not a diagnosed problem itself, but a symptom of another underlying problem such as a herniated disc or spinal stenosis as this pain occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated in the lumbar region of your spine. Because of the complexity of the sciatic nerve, symptoms may vary depending on where the nerve is being irritated.
This animation of the sciatica nerve may be helpful in understanding its complexity.
You may have sciatica pain if you notice these symptoms:
- Constant pain in one side of the buttocks or one leg (pain can occur in both legs but it is rare)
- Pain that is worse when sitting (or when your spine is compressed)
- Burning, tingling, or searing leg pain (not a dull aching)
- Weak, numb, or difficult to move leg or foot
- Sharp pains when trying to stand up making it difficult to transition from sitting to standing.
The majority of sufferers get better within a few months, or even weeks, and find pain relief without surgery. However, depending on the underlying condition causing the sciatica pain, you may need surgical treatment.
How RelaxoBak products can help
RelaxoBak orthopedic seat cushions can help to reduce the pain associated with the sciatic nerve. As an FDA Registered Medical Device Manufacturer, RelaxoBak makes products that help relieve pressure on your coccyx, which would normally cause your spinal discs to compress. By alleviating the pressure on your discs, often times the sciatic nerve will experience reduced irritation or pinching allowing for a reduction or alleviation of your sciatica pain.
